Dirt bikes come in many different shapes, sizes, and engine displacements. The smallest type of dirt bike is the 50cc dirt bike. It’s one of the rarer and lesser used ones. But since you came to this page, you are clearly interested in them. Let’s break down the typical features of this dirt bike, and why you should or shouldn’t get one.
Then, we’ll look at a couple good options for those dirt bikes that are available on the market now.
Why You Should Get One
- They are best suited for kids around the ages of 6 – 8 (check the product page for specifications). Because they’re small and lightweight, they’re a good choice for small kids who aren’t ready yet for a more advanced dirt bike.
- They’re cheaper. Since they don’t use a lot of power and have a small engine, they cost considerably less too. So they’re a good option for people who are on a budget. You might even say they’re… dirt cheap 😉 (Sorry).
- There are many good brands that make 50cc dirt bikes. These include Flying Horse, Coolster, Yamaha, and SSR Motorsports. Usually it’s hard to find a recognizable brand that makes these dirt bikes, but thankfully there are a few here.
Why You Shouldn’t Get One
- They don’t exactly have a stellar performance. The engines are small and 2-stroke, so they’re meant to perform less functions.
- 2-stroke engines are also more noisy.
- They are lightweight, so they can’t be used extensively for motorsports and off-roading.
Some Good Options
Now that you know a little bit about 50cc dirt bikes, let’s look at some examples of good ones to own, based on the information above.
Coolster 50cc Dirt Bike (Review)
User Rating: (3.9/5)
This is a 2-stroke high performance mini dirt bike that is gas-powered. It’s manufactured by the Coolster brand, which is known for making bikes and ATVs.
The Good: This dirt bike is a good choice for beginners. If you have no prior experience in Motocross or off-roading, then I would recommend a bike like this one. It has upgraded shocks, foot pegs, and a kick stand, which give it a good level of safety. As a beginner kid riding a motorized bike, safety is one of the most important features of the bike. It’s also recommended to wear a helmet when riding it. This bike is also very lightweight, as it weighs only 57 pounds. This saves you the hassle of having to carry and maneuver a heavy bike. It allows a maximum rider weight of 127 pounds. Young pre-teen boys will especially like it because it has a cool design and its light enough to be maneuvered by them easily.
This is a compact bike with dimensions 3.5 x 2.2 x 2.3 feet. It has a pull start engine. Overall, it’s a small and convenient bike, and not complicated or difficult to ride.
The Bad: Some verified users have called into question the quality of this bike and some of its parts. It’s recommended to contact the seller and inquire about the quality, and even ask for some pictures, before buying.
PCC 49DBA 50cc Dirt Bike (Review)
User Rating: (4.4/5)
This 49DBA dirt bike is one of the best-rated and most highly recommended 50cc dirt bikes. It has a single cylinder, air-cooled 50 cc engine. It comes with a 30-day parts replacement warranty, and it’s not sold in the state of California due to state laws. It weighs 49 pounds and has dimensions of 39 x 21 x 11 inches. Let’s look at why this bike has a high user rating.
The Good: This is a good-quality bike with an air-cooled 2-stroke engine. Even though the engine is 2-stroke, it’s considerably less noisy than one would expect. It’s an automatic, which makes it easy for riding. It also has a kill switch. This makes it another good beginner’s bike.
Compared to the Coolster bike, this bike is ideal for younger children. It’s smaller and more lightweight. The speed is also lesser, as the maximum speed is 25 mph. This is still pretty fast in its own respect. The maximum weight capacity is 100 lbs, so its clearly intended for small children. What makes this bike so great is that children love it for being safe, easy to ride, fun, and effective at learning to tide.
The Bad: This bike takes a little knowledge and practice to get used to. You’ll need to learn about the carburetor and choke, in order to use it. It’s recommended to get mechanical knowledge. All in all, this is one of the better dirt bikes to get.
DB50X Dirt Bike (Review)
User Rating: (3.4/5)
Another dirt bike that’s worth a recommendation is the DB50X bike by PPC Motor. It comes with a 30-day parts replacement warranty, and is not sold in the state of California due to state laws. It weighs 48 pounds and has a fuel capacity of 0.26 gallons. It allows a maximum rider weight of 128 pounds.
The Good: Like the Coolster bike, this is another good dirt bike for kids that are just starting out as beginners. It has a simple 2-stroke air-cooled engine, which doesn’t use a lot of power. It has several features that ensure the safety of the child riding the bike. There are front and rear disc brakes, and automatic transmission. The engine is fairly simple, and it’s not hard to learn how to ride. Bikes like these are a gateway to learning to ride bigger bikes, and even going into Motorsporting.
The Bad: Like the previous bike, the DB50X requires some mechanical skill and knowledge to operate, which you’d have to teach a kid. This bike also has some of the common shortfalls associates with bikes of this size. See the “Why You Shouldn’t Get One” for more details.
Personally, we don’t recommend getting a 49cc or 50cc dirt bike, because they’re not the best kinds of bikes out there. You should still try our recommendations, since they’re hand-picked for being the best-rated ones in their category. But there are alternatives that are better. Dirt bikes that have a 50cc engine often don’t work very well, and they get complaints about their performance. In order to get a really good one, you need to spend a considerable amount of money. But if you’re spending that extra money anyway, there are some alternatives that we recommend. These are bikes that have a slightly bigger engine, and they also tend to fare better among riders:
